It depends on the reference. My Sub and GMT are 5-digit and my DD and Daytona are older 6-digit. I would not want it the other way around.I personally prefer the 6 digit for the maxi dial and hands. I also prefer the traditional orange 24-hour hand and its shape. But on a smaller wrist, the 5 .5 digit is THE Sub that made it famous. 6 digits are beautiful pieces but the 5 digit is the one. Thanks for this, but you're going to let out the secret that 5-digit Rolex models are the absolute best combination of quality, looks (pre-MAXI cases/dials/hands), and price right now!
5 digit was lighter on the wrist and less obtrusive. 6 digit felt larger but actually fit way better due to only 3 fixed links on 6:00 side and glidelock clasp. 5 digit felt like a “tool watch”, 6 digit felt .Except for the Rolex Quartz 5100, Datejust 1630, and the Rolex Date 1530, virtually all four-digit Rolex reference number watches were originally fitted with acrylic crystals. I own both (5 digit black dial / 6 digit polar) and imo the 216570 polar is the winner. Granted, I have a 7.25” wrist and prefer 40mm - 43mm watches. I love the white dial in 42mm. Rolex Reference Numbers: What do they mean? While they may appear to be an arbitrary string of digits at first glance, Rolex reference numbers are the key to unlocking . It depends on the reference. besides the few minor differences, 5 and 6 digit day dates are essentially the same watch. there's a bigger argument when it comes to sports models because 5 digits have much different proportions and wear smaller
At any rate, both earlier and later models certainly have their merits. Yet for me, the 16613 wears much more comfortably on my wrist, and the dial is a thing of beauty.it changes and "pops" depending upon the angle in which it's viewed. In comparison, the 6 digit dial is a bit flat and lifeless. I personally prefer the 6 digit for the maxi dial and hands. I also prefer the traditional orange 24-hour hand and its shape. I seem to prefer the blue from the 5 digit era, plus I like the dial detail a little better (the one with the minute track and the Roman 5 minute markers) but I've never seen it in person. A friend of mine has the new blue dial, and it’s striking. i have the 5 digit. i tried them on side by side and found the 5 digit fit my 7.25" wrist much better. the bracelet is an irrelevance for me as i rarely wear it. what does make a difference (to me) is that the 5 digit polar is brilliant at taking different straps. 5 digit was lighter on the wrist and less obtrusive. 6 digit felt larger but actually fit way better due to only 3 fixed links on 6:00 side and glidelock clasp. 5 digit felt like a “tool watch”, 6 digit felt like jewelry.
The dial and bezel are the same size. So too is the bracelet. The difference between the two generations of Submariners is in the size of the case. The 6-digit is wider, chunkier, and has substantially thicker lugs (the four pieces that stick out from the case and attach to the bracelet). It depends on the reference.
